Despite being the largest cadres in the All India Services (AIS), Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh send fewer officers on central deputation. Data shows that by October 2024, only 7 officers from Maharashtra and 12 from UP were in key positions like secretary and additional secretary at the Centre. In contrast, smaller states like Odisha and AGMUT cadre have more representation. Factors such as officers’ reluctance to leave state postings, patronage, and better opportunities within their home states contribute to the disparity in central deputation participation.
