Over 2 Tonne of Clothes Pulled from Ganga as Gangotri Yatra Sparks Pollution Concern

During the ongoing Char Dham Yatra, the Gangotri Nagar Panchayat in Uttarakhand has collected over two tonnes of clothing discarded by pilgrims into the Ganga (Bhagirathi) River near Gangotri shrine. This tradition, though age-old, is causing environmental concerns. Civic workers, with support from SDRF, are removing the garments and promoting recycling through local self-help groups. Last year, 22 tonnes of clothes were repurposed into mats. Authorities are now urging pilgrims to use designated collection points. The initiative, launched in 2023, aims to reduce river pollution while offering livelihood opportunities to nearby villagers through eco-friendly recycling. (PC: HT)
