On May 26, 2025, a senior Palestinian official stated that Hamas has agreed to a U.S.-mediated ceasefire proposal involving a 70-day truce, phased release of Israeli hostages, and partial Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza. The deal also includes the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. However, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff denied authorship of the proposal, calling it “completely unacceptable,” and Israel outright rejected the terms, stating no responsible government could accept them. Prime Minister Netanyahu reaffirmed that any truce must be conditional on hostage releases, with the ultimate goal of dismantling Hamas. (PC: Reuters)
