Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus has announced that general elections will be held in April 2026. This marks the first electoral process since last year’s mass protests forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India. Yunus, the 84-year-old Nobel laureate heading the caretaker government, said the polls would be held in the first half of April. The 2024-25 unrest, sparked by discontent over job quota reforms, rapidly grew into a national anti-corruption movement. Violent clashes led to over 300 deaths and 10,000 arrests, prompting international concern. The upcoming elections aim to restore democratic order in the country. (PC: Boomberg)
