A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Wednesday evening, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration. The tremor, occurring at 7:01 pm local time, had a depth of 30.9 km. The US Geological Survey reported it as a 5.9 magnitude quake, 71 km south of Hualien City. Buildings in Taipei shook for about a minute, but no major damage or casualties were reported. Taiwan, situated on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, regularly experiences quakes.
