Violence erupted on June 11–12 in Rabindranagar–Akra and Nadiyal areas of Maheshtala, on the outskirts of Kolkata, when a dispute over a temporary shop escalated into stone pelting between rival groups. A mob hurled bricks and burned tyres, damaging police vehicles and setting a motorcycle ablaze. At least five police personnel—including a female constable, an SDPO-ranked officer, and the DC (Port)—were injured. Authorities responded with tear gas, lathicharge, and deployed the Rapid Action Force. Four suspects have been arrested, and curfew-like prohibitory orders under BNS 163 were imposed. BJP leaders called for central forces, while TMC dismissed the unrest as local vandalism. (PC: PTI)
