With tensions rising in the Strait of Hormuz, India is relying on its underground rock caverns in Visakhapatnam, Mangalore, and Padur to store 5.33 MMT (38 million barrels) of crude oil. These Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR), located 90-196 metres underground, can cover about 10 days of national demand, acting as shock absorbers against global supply disruptions. Two more sites in Odisha and Karnataka are being developed to increase capacity. Diversified oil sources, rising Russian imports, and expanded refinery output further insulate India. The system, inspired by Sweden and adopted since 1998, provides security from aerial attacks and environmental risks. (PC: India Today)
