He entrusted his Gaden Phodrang Trust—established in 2015—with sole authority to identify and recognize his reincarnation, in consultation with senior lamas and Dharma protectors . Making the announcement ahead of his 90th birthday, he stated the next Dalai Lama may be born outside China, countering Beijing’s claim over the process .
