A span of the Gambhira Bridge over Gujarat’s Mahisagar River collapsed near Padra, Vadodara, killing around 18 and leaving three missing. The 1985-built bridge, heavily used by lorries avoiding tolls, gave way around 7:30am Wednesday, sending multiple vehicles into the river. Rescue teams recovered five bodies overnight; five survivors are stable. CM Bhupendra Patel suspended four engineers after a probe and announced ₹4 lakh compensation per victim. The collapse disrupted traffic and reignited scrutiny of Gujarat’s bridge infrastructure, especially post-Morbi tragedy. A ₹217 crore proposal for a new bridge was cleared in 2024.
