China’s embassy in New Delhi has called Tibet-related issues—especially the succession of the Dalai Lama—a “thorn” in bilateral ties with India, warning it has become a diplomatic burden for New Delhi. This statement comes just before External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to China—his first since the 2020 Ladakh standoff. Chinese officials criticized recent Indian remarks endorsing the Dalai Lama's authority over his own reincarnation, calling such comments “improper” and insisting the reincarnation process is an internal Chinese matter.
