A massive scandal has erupted in Thailand after 35-year-old Wilawan Emsawat, known as "Ms Golf", was arrested for extorting nearly 385 million baht (approx. ₹100 crore) from Buddhist monks. Emsawat allegedly had sexual relations with multiple monks and secretly filmed the encounters. She used over 80,000 explicit videos and photos to blackmail senior members of the clergy for years. The scandal has led to several monks being defrocked or fleeing. Police have launched a wider investigation into monastic corruption, seizing luxury goods and files, and prompting calls for stricter oversight of Thailand’s powerful Buddhist establishment.
