Eighty-year-old Dukhu Majhi from Purulia, West Bengal—known as "Gachh Dadu" (Tree Grandfather)—has dedicated his life to planting over 5,000 trees across the rugged Ajodhya Hills since age 15 and was honoured with the Padma Shri in early 2024 . However, a recent India Today visit revealed he and his family still reside in a dilapidated mud house, patched with tarpaulin and hay, with a swampy floor and leaking roof . Despite repeated appeals under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, he hasn’t received assistance. Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has pledged ₹2 lakh in aid to start building a permanent home.
