WWF-India's landmark wildlife survey in Arunachal Pradesh has captured the first-ever photographic evidence of the elusive Pallas's cat in the eastern Himalayas. The eight-month study used 136 camera traps across 2,000 sq km in West Kameng and Tawang districts, documenting remarkable wildcat diversity including snow leopards, common leopards, clouded leopards, and marbled cats above 4,200 meters. The survey recorded India's highest elevation limits for several species, with common leopards at 4,600 meters and clouded leopards at 4,650 meters. The project, funded by the UK's Darwin Initiative, involved local Brokpa herding communities and demonstrated successful coexistence between pastoral traditions and wildlife conservation in these fragile high-altitude rangelands.
