Kolkata and nearby areas were hit by the heaviest rain in 37 years, leaving at least 10 dead. The six-hour downpour caused floods, damaged roads, and submerged puja pandals. Five deaths were reported in the city due to electrocution, while two occurred in North and South 24 Parganas. The IMD said rainfall reached 98 mm per hour, just short of a cloudburst. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced early school holidays, online college classes, and advised officials to work from home. Railways cancelled trains, and flights were diverted.
