The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk and his institute, Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL), for alleged violation of foreign funding rules. Officials said a preliminary enquiry began about two months ago following a reference from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Wangchuk was called to appear before the CBI but has not responded. The agency is examining financial records from 2022 to 2024. Wangchuk denied wrongdoing, saying the institute exports knowledge and earns revenue, not foreign funds. The Centre also blamed him for inciting recent Ladakh protests that turned violent. (PC: HT)
