Two Killed in Morocco Youth Protests as GenZ 212 Movement Escalates Into Deadly Clashes With Security Forces

Two people were killed in Lqliaa, near Agadir, Morocco, when security forces used firearms after a group attempted stealing weapons from a gendarmerie facility Wednesday night. The deadly incident marks an escalation in anti-government protests that began Saturday, demanding better education and healthcare. The youth-led "GenZ 212" movement, organized via TikTok, Instagram, and Discord, saw membership surge from 3,000 to 130,000. Violence spread to Salé, Tangier, and Souss region towns, with youths looting shops, burning banks and police vehicles. Morocco's youth unemployment stands at 35.8%. So far, 409 people have been detained, with 193 facing trial. This represents Morocco's most violent unrest since 2016-2017 Rif demonstrations.
