Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to restore democracy and human rights in Venezuela. The Nobel Committee praised her “tireless struggle for peaceful change.” Former US President Donald Trump, who had publicly campaigned for the award, was not selected. Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes said their decision was based on “courage and integrity,” not politics. Experts said Trump’s recent Gaza peace deal came too late for this year’s prize. They added that the committee showed independence, choosing a cause the US itself has long supported. (PC: X)
