Hurricane Melissa, a Category 3 storm, struck eastern Cuba near Chivirico early Wednesday, bringing fierce winds and heavy rain. The storm caused major damage across the Caribbean, killing seven people — three in Jamaica, three in Haiti, and one in the Dominican Republic. More than half a million Cubans lost power as homes, hospitals, and roads were hit by flooding and fallen trees. Authorities warned of deadly landslides and storm surges up to 12 feet. The disaster deepened Cuba’s ongoing economic crisis, marked by shortages of fuel, food, and electricity. Emergency aid efforts are now underway. (PC: The Indian Express)
