Egypt's Grand Egyptian Museum, billed as the world's largest archaeological facility dedicated to a single civilization, opens Saturday near Cairo's Giza pyramids after a two-decade construction costing $1 billion. The 470,000-square-meter complex houses over 50,000 artifacts, including an 83-ton Ramesses II colossus and Pharaoh Khufu's 4,500-year-old boat. Announced in 1992, construction began in 2005, with soft launches in 2024. The museum features 24,000 square meters of exhibition space, advanced multimedia technology, and 12 main galleries spanning prehistoric to Roman eras. Egypt expects 15,000-20,000 daily visitors, hoping to boost tourism and foreign currency reserves. The opening follows multiple postponements, most recently due to Middle East conflicts including the Gaza crisis.
