Fear of Voter Roll Revision Sparks Surge in Illegal Immigrants Returning to Bangladesh from Bengal Border

Border Security Force (BSF) and Bengal Police have reported a sharp rise in illegal immigrants trying to return to Bangladesh. Nearly 100 Bangladeshis were caught near Basirhat in North 24-Parganas in recent days. Officials said fear of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls may be driving the trend. On Friday, 56 people were detained in Swarupnagar, followed by 38 more the next night. BJP called it proof of large-scale infiltration, while Trinamool Congress said the SIR is being misused to target citizens. Over 3,500 people have returned voluntarily through Bengal’s border this year. (PC: The Telegraph)
