Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state will issue firearm licences to indigenous people living in vulnerable and remote areas by February 2026. The move aims to enhance security for minority indigenous communities, especially near the Bangladesh border. Sarma said the licences will be issued “very selectively” after careful review of applications. The decision follows a cabinet proposal made in May and comes ahead of the 2026 state elections. The chief minister said this step fulfils a long-standing demand to protect the “jati, mati aru bheti” — the identity, land, and homeland — of Assam’s indigenous people. (PC: X)
