A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan on Sunday evening, prompting a tsunami warning. The quake struck about 10km below the sea surface around 5pm local time. Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for waves up to one metre high. Small tsunami waves of 10–20cm were later recorded in several coastal cities. There were no immediate reports of injuries, damage, or issues at nearby nuclear power plants. Train services were briefly halted, and power outages were reported. Officials urged people to stay away from the coast as aftershocks and further waves remain possible.
