UK Plans 20-Year Wait for Refugees to Settle Permanently Under New Asylum Rules

The UK government will introduce major asylum reforms that will force refugees to wait 20 years before applying for permanent settlement. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce the changes on Monday. Under the plan, refugees will get temporary status for two-and-a-half years, after which their cases will be reviewed. If their home country is declared safe, they will have to return. Mahmood said the rules are meant to stop illegal boat crossings. Critics, including refugee groups and some Labour MPs, say the plan is harsh and will not deter people fleeing war or torture. This year, over 32,000 migrants crossed the Channel. (PC: BBC)
