Argentine football icon Lionel Messi is happy with the 70-foot-tall statue erected in his honour in Kolkata’s Lake Town area, West Bengal minister Sujit Bose said. According to the minister, Messi’s management conveyed their appreciation for the statue, which depicts the footballer holding the FIFA World Cup trophy. Built in about 40 days, the iron structure has become a major attraction for fans in the football-loving city. The statue is expected to be virtually unveiled by Messi during his proposed GOAT India Tour 2025, underlining the superstar’s massive fan following in India and Bengal’s deep-rooted football culture.
