The United States says it used a special forces mission to detain Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from Caracas. President Donald Trump said the pair were taken after months of intelligence work on Maduro’s movements and security. US officials said the raid used helicopters from a warship and began after strikes on air defence sites and military bases. The goal was to open a safe air path into a guarded army complex where Maduro was believed to stay. The commandos landed on rooftops, searched the bunker area and left within hours.
