Around 1,600 tourists are stranded in Lachen in North Sikkim after a landslide hit the road to Mangan on April 5. Snowfall since April 7 has made conditions worse. The Indian Army started a rescue mission called Operation Himsetu. The Army said it is working to restore access and help tourists. “Troops have opened critical passes and activated alternate routes,” the Army said. Only about 150 tourists were rescued till Thursday morning. Rinam Lachenpa, a local resident, said an alternate route exists but takes longer and should be used as a last option. (PC: HT)
