Fossils uncovered after heavy rains in Tamil Nadu have been dated to around 12,000 years old, Union minister Bhupender Yadav said. The discovery was made in Thoothukudi after soil erosion in 2023 exposed buried remains. Scientists said the fossils belong to the Holocene period. They believe the findings can help study ancient species and past climate. “These findings are crucial in helping us better understand India’s ancient biodiversity,” Yadav said. Experts added the fossils may show whether the area once had forests, grasslands, or marine influence. Studies are ongoing. (PC: India Today)
