Early trends in West Bengal show the Bharatiya Janata Party expanding beyond its North Bengal strongholds. The party is leading in districts like Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri, which have been its base. It is also gaining in the tribal-dominated Jangalmahal region, including Medinipur. BJP leader Sankar Kumar Guchhait is ahead in Medinipur. The party is also leading in parts of the Presidency region, including Howrah Dakshin and Howrah Uttar. The All India Trinamool Congress is ahead in Howrah Madhya.
