Gaurav Gogoi, chief of the Congress’s Assam unit, lost the Jorhat seat in his first Assembly election. He was defeated by Hitendra Nath Goswami of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who retained the seat. Gogoi got 46,257 votes, while Goswami secured 69,439. The BJP was leading in 78 of 126 seats and looked set to return to power. Congress was ahead in 21 of 99 seats it contested, with ally Raijor Dal leading in two. Professor Kaustubh Deka said, “It will be very difficult for the Congress to come back.” (PC: HT)
