The Central government has ordered the iconic Delhi Gymkhana Club to vacate its 27.3-acre Safdarjung Road premises in New Delhi by June 5, citing the need for defence infrastructure and national security projects. Founded in 1913 during the British era, the elite club has long been associated with India’s political, bureaucratic, and military circles. The order was issued by the Land and Development Office under the Union Housing Ministry. Club members have expressed shock and may challenge the move legally, while concerns have also emerged over the fate of the club’s heritage buildings, sporting legacy, and nearly 500 employees.
