Kolkata is set to join India’s expanding Water Metro network, becoming the 18th city to adopt the innovative water-based public transport system. The project aims to provide a faster, greener, and more efficient travel alternative by utilizing the Hooghly River for urban commuting. As part of the plan, 41 new jetties will be developed to strengthen connectivity between Kolkata and Howrah while reducing pressure on congested roads and rail networks. The initiative is expected to improve mobility, promote sustainable transportation, and enhance the city’s waterways infrastructure, marking a significant step toward modernizing public transport in West Bengal.
