Iranian supporters displayed pre-revolutionary Iranian flags inside Levi’s Stadium during the Qatar–Switzerland FIFA World Cup match, despite FIFA’s restrictions on political symbols at tournament venues. The green, white and red tricolour featuring the lion and sun emblem was reportedly visible during the first half, reviving a symbol widely associated with opposition to Iran’s current government. FIFA guidelines prohibit political, offensive or discriminatory materials, yet the flags reappeared after similar incidents during the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Asian Cup. Iran’s participation in the tournament had faced uncertainty amid the Iran-Israel conflict. The Iranian squad trained in Tijuana before travelling to Los Angeles ahead of its upcoming World Cup fixture against Belgium.
