The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has clarified that an Indian passport is primarily a travel document and not conclusive proof of Indian citizenship. The clarification has sparked questions about which documents establish citizenship. Officials said there is no single document that automatically proves citizenship for every Indian. While passports, Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards and driving licences are important identity documents, they do not by themselves establish citizenship. In certain cases, birth certificates, citizenship certificates, or documents supporting citizenship under the Citizenship Act may be required. The MEA said the clarification reflects existing legal provisions and is not a change in policy. (PC: India Today)
