A powerful heatwave forced the temporary closure of the Great American State Fair on Washington, DC’s National Mall as Fourth of July celebrations got underway. More than 165 million people across the US East Coast and Midwest were under extreme heat warnings, with temperatures reaching up to 41°C in cities including Washington and Philadelphia. Organisers closed the fair until evening to protect visitors and staff. Several Independence Day events were delayed or cancelled because of dangerous conditions.
