Twenty-three-year-old Asmita Dey created history by becoming India's first Commonwealth Games judo champion, winning the women's 48kg gold at Glasgow. The Tripura judoka defeated Canada's Heidi Quach 2-1 through a dramatic Golden Score after earlier overcoming Scotland's Eva Ewing and host favourite Summer Shaw. Born in Belonia to bicycle mechanic Arjun Kumar Dey, Asmita began as an 800m runner before switching to judo. She trained at Tripura Sports School and the Sports Authority of India Regional Centre in Bhopal before joining the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Sports Minister Tinku Roy hailed her landmark achievement as an inspiration for future generations.
