At least five people were killed and 41 remained missing after the Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry caught fire off Indonesia's Madura Island on Sunday. The vessel was carrying 271 passengers and crew members, with 225 rescued as search and rescue operations continued. The ferry was travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the blaze erupted between 6 am and 7 am near Sumenep regency. According to Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the ferry operator reported the incident about an hour later after receiving information from the captain. Authorities later lost contact with the burning vessel as rescue efforts intensified.
