The Supreme Court has asked the Centre and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to prepare a pilot plan that could stop uninsured vehicles from getting fuel at petrol pumps. The court also proposed using Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and digital systems to identify uninsured vehicles and issue e-challans automatically. It said many vehicles on Indian roads do not have valid insurance, delaying compensation for accident victims. The court also suggested longer mandatory third-party insurance for new vehicles. The Centre, IRDAI and other authorities have been asked to submit compliance reports by August 14. (PC: Reuters)
