Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military commander known as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” has died aged 84 while serving a life sentence in The Hague. Mladić was convicted in 2017 of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the 1992–95 Bosnian war. He was held responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed, and for the prolonged siege of Sarajevo. After 16 years as a fugitive, he was arrested in Serbia in 2011. His death marks the end of the life of one of the conflict’s most notorious figures. (PC: AP)
