After hitting a serve winner, Zverev moved behind the baseline as though preparing to return, believing the score was 5-1. He did not react to the chair umpire’s announcement or the roaring Arthur Ashe crowd, taking about 10 seconds to realise he had secured his second Grand Slam title. Zverev defeated Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-2. He acknowledged partisan home crowd, saying 99.9% wanted Shelton to win but praising the atmosphere and fairness. The victory also extended America’s men’s Grand Slam drought.
