The death by suicide of second-year BTech student Sahil Wakode at IIT Bombay has put student suicides across IITs back in focus. The institute has suspended a professor named in an FIR and apologised for its earlier statement. The student's father has alleged abetment on grounds of caste discrimination. Three days of protests followed on the Powai campus. The Centre told Parliament that 39 students died by suicide across IITs between 2018 and 2023. A Supreme Court-appointed task force found that 90% of faculty lacked adequate training to support distressed students. Counselling drives, hostel changes and official inquiries are under way.
