A newborn elephant calf, swept away by the Teesta river's strong current, was rescued by fishermen in Jalpaiguri's Gajoldoba area and reunited with its mother. The five-day-old calf was separated from its herd on Monday morning while crossing the swollen river near the Saraswatipur tea garden in Baikunthapur forest. Fishermen spotted it floating near the barrage, trunk raised, sinking and resurfacing. They rowed to mid-river, pulled it onto their boat and alerted the forest department. Baikunthapur DFO Mudit Kumar said the calf was released into the forest in good health, and the herd accepted it. The mother was seen rushing to her calf, trumpeting with joy.
