Mirabai Chanu won her first Asian Games medal on Wednesday, taking silver in the women’s 49kg category in Nagoya, Japan. Her 198kg total ended India’s 28-year wait for an Asian Games weightlifting medal. North Korea’s Ri Song Gum won gold with a record 215kg, while Indonesia’s Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze with 191kg. Chanu lifted 87kg in the snatch and successfully cleared 107kg and 111kg in the clean and jerk. The 31-year-old had finished ninth in 2014, missed 2018 due to injury and placed fourth in 2023.
