Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the women’s 49kg category at the Asian Games 2026 on Wednesday, ending India’s 28-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the event. Chanu lifted 198kg, including 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk. North Korea’s Ri Song-gum won gold with a record total of 215kg, while Indonesia’s Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze with 191kg. Chanu had finished fourth at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023. Her silver also made her only the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win medals across all major international competitions, including the Olympics and World Championships.
