Mirabai Chanu finally won her maiden Asian Games medal, taking silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Games. The Tokyo Olympic silver medallist totalled 198kg, finishing behind North Korea’s Ri Song Gum, who won gold with 215kg. Chanu’s silver ended India’s 28-year wait for an Asian Games weightlifting medal, since Karnam Malleswari’s silver in 1998. The medal also completed a major gap in Chanu’s decorated career, which includes Olympic silver, a world championship gold and multiple Commonwealth titles. She had missed the podium at the 2014 and 2023 Asian Games and missed the 2018 edition through injury. Chanu had pursued an Asian Games medal for 12 years.
