Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel to “16 9/11s” during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He said around 1,200 Israelis were killed and 251 people were taken hostage in the attack. Netanyahu used the comparison to explain the scale of the casualties relative to Israel’s population of about 10 million. He also rejected allegations that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, calling them “the biggest lie of the century”.
