India Explores Air Route Over China’s Xinjiang to Cut Flight Time Amid Pakistan Airspace Ban

India is exploring an alternative air corridor over China’s Xinjiang region to reduce flight time and costs caused by Pakistan’s airspace ban, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said on Tuesday. The proposed route would pass through Hotan in southwestern Xinjiang before connecting to routes towards Europe, the UK and North America. Since Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian airlines in April 2025, carriers have faced detours adding up to two hours to some flights. Naidu said India’s External Affairs Ministry was discussing the proposal with China. However, no agreement or timeline for opening the corridor has been announced. (PC: HT)
