Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has accused the Centre of backtracking on assurances regarding Ladakh’s political representation and constitutional safeguards. He expressed concern over uncertainty surrounding the proposed October 22 meeting with the Union Home Ministry, after earlier talks failed to reach an agreement. Wangchuk and Ladakh’s representative bodies, the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, want a Union Territory with a legislature and stronger protections for local land, culture and identity. They rejected the Centre’s draft proposal, saying it fell short of previous commitments. The Centre maintains that negotiations will continue to seek a mutually acceptable framework. (PC: The Hindu)
