A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Tibet on October 22, 2026, at 8:03 pm IST, at a reported depth of 173 kilometres, according to India’s National Centre of Seismology. The epicentre was approximately 400 kilometres from the Tibetan capital, Lhasa. The tremor came weeks after devastating flash floods triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26. The floods killed at least 1,455 people, while 5,285 remained missing when Nepal ended search operations. Chinese state media reported 43 deaths and more than 500 missing on the Tibetan side. Independent verification remains difficult because information from affected areas is limited, the report said.
