Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the Congress for opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), attributing it to "appeasement and vote-bank politics." Shah's remarks follow the implementation of the law by the Centre, over four years after its passage in Parliament. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The CAA aims to confer Indian nationality to such migrants who entered India before December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution. The Congress, however, questioned the timing of the law's notification ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
