The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has surpassed the halfway mark in the Lok Sabha elections but with a narrower lead than exit polls predicted. The NDA is ahead in 290 seats, while the opposition INDIA alliance leads in 234 seats. With 272 seats needed to form a government in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the close contest has sparked speculation that the opposition may approach BJP allies. However, Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar has denied reports of reaching out to Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar and Telugu Desam Party head Chandrababu Naidu for support.
